  103. the closure of this newsletter.  I'm suprised by the number of people who
  104. use this newsletter as their only source of Trek information.

  106. There is a way of continuing publication of this newsletter and that is of
  107. finding 3 foreign correspondents who will be responsible for collating Trek
  108. news in their specific geographical location, which are UK, USA and mainland

  157.     Star Trek: The Next Generation had, after several years in the
  158. syndicated market, proven to be highly profitable for Parmount Pictures.
  159. It continually placed high in the syndicated ratings, with only FOX's
  160. animated "Batman" series vying for the title of first place winner in the
  161. ratings among syndicated science fiction shows.
  162.     Many people often felt however, that the type of stories that could be
  163. told from the perspective of crew members cruising through the galaxy on a
  164. spaceship were limited and different from the kind of adventures and
  165. stories that could be told in a more static environment such as those on a
  166. stationary space station.
  167.     And so, the concept of telling stories which centered around the
  168. personnel of a spacestation in a fixed orbit, began to take shape.
  169. Providing the background for the concept was the long war between the
  170. Bajorans and the Cardassians - two races introduced on Star Trek: The Next
  171. Generation.
  172.     The background of the space station is simple - it was a mining station
  173. built by the Cardassians while they were in military control of Bajor.
  174. After the truce between the two warring factions, aided by the Federation,
  175. the Cardassians agreed to vacate the Bajoran system and leave the
  176. spacestation in the hands of the Bajorans.  The Federation sent advisory
  177. personnel to the station to help maintain the station's facilities and to
  178. aid the Bajorans in piecing their world together and uniting various
  179. factions on the planet.
  180.    On board the station representing the Federation interests are Commander
  181. Benjamin Sisko (and his son Jake), Doctor Julian Bashir, Lieutenant Jadzia
  182. Dax, and Operations Chief Miles O'Brien.  Commander Sisko, as seen in the
  183. two-hour pilot episode, lost his wife in the battle against the Borg as
  184. depicted in The Next Generation episode BEST OF BOTH WORLDS, PART II and
  185. holds some small amount of enmity for Captain Picard whom he believes
  186. caused the death of his wife.
  187.    Chief O'Brien was promoted from his occasional role on The Next
  188. Generation to a new and expanded role as Operations Chief in this series.
  189. O'Brien's wife, Keiko, makes occasional appearances as she did on The Next
  190. Generation.
  191.    Lieutenant Jadzia Dax is a unique representative of the Federation - a
  192. member of the Trill race, first seen in The Next Generation episode, THE
  193. HOST (see star-trek-tng.guide for more details).  Although outwardly
  194. she appears to be a human female, inside she has a long-lived parasitic
  195. creature with whom she shares a symbiotic relationship.  She and Commander
  196. Sisko knew each other from the past - but at that time, Dax was a male.
  197. The relationsip between her and Sisko grows and changes and her
  198. relationships with others on the station should prove interesting as the
  199. series progresses.
  200.    Representing the Bajorans on the station is Major Kira, an ex-member of
  201. a rebel group of Bajorans who practiced terrorist acts on the Cardassians.
  202. She has now apparently given up her former ways, and is working for the
  203. leading political faction of Bajor as a liaison to the Federation.  
  204.    Also aboard the station is Security Chief Odo, a member of an unknown
  205. race with the ability to transform his shape into anything he chooses.
  206. While his history is still much unknown, we do know he was the Security
  207. Chief on the station when the Cardassians were in control and was asked to
  208. remain on when the Bajorans and the Federation took over the station.
  209.    The station is not primarily a military outpost (although it may have
  210. been under the Cardassians even though it was said to be a mining station)
  211. but rather it is intended to be a recreational post or way station for
  212. travelers.  The promenade area of the station is occupied by various shops
  213. and other services for rest and relaxation.  Running the local bar and
  214. gambling casino is Quark, a Ferengi.  We know his motives are purely
  215. profitary in nature, but will he be an ally of the Federation or hinder
  216. their efforts to effect a peace on Bajor?  Odo and Quark do not get along
  217. (although they seem to be friendly enemies) and it remains to be seen just
  218. how their relationship grows and changes.
  219.    This episode guide contains the list of all of the episodes to date in
  220. the order in which they were aired.  Included in the description of each
  221. episode is the producer, director and the writer as well as the guest cast
  222. list and the parts they played.  In most cases, the names of characters
  223. were taken from the TV Guide or guessed at from their usages in the
  224. episode.  Also included for each episode is a brief synopsis of the show
  225. hopefully WITHOUT spoilers.

  296. restless at having nothing to do on the station as a botanist, decides to
  297. open a school for the children living on the station.

  332. A shuttlecraft on an exploratory mission in the Gamma Quadrant finds Vash
  333. alone on a planet and in need of help.  They bring her back to the station
  334. along with her curios from archeological digs in the quadrant.  Q pays a
  335. visit to the station to try and convince Vash to travel with him again as
  336. they did when they left the Enterprise together in the episode QPID.  Vash
  337. has no plans to go with Q and there is some obvious enmity between them.
  338. Instead, she joins with Quark in a business venture to sell the items she
  339. has found in the Gamma Quadrant.  Meanwhile, a strange energy drain
  340. befuddles the crew of the station and draws them inexorably closer to the
  341. worm hole.

  355. prove that Kurzon Dax (her old Trill identity) and Jadzia Dax (her current
  356. Trill identity) are not the same being.

  407. Quark and twin Myridon's who are trying to fence a valuable item.  The
  408. robbery attempt is foiled by Odo who takes Kroden prisoner but not before
  409. one of the Myridon's is killed.  While in custody, Kroden tells Odo that
  410. he's encountered other changelings in the Gamma Quadrant and a strange
  411. necklace he wears may hold the key to Odo's past.

  413. BATTLE LINES

  435. Two Bajoran factions in dispute over territory enlist Sisko's aid in
  436. negotiations.  One faction, led by a inexperienced child named Varis, is
  437. holding lands claimed by the other faction, led by Wolban.  The original
  438. boundary between the two is a river which had been diverted from its course
  439. by the Cardassians.  Varis is befriended by Jake and Nog, who help her to
  440. find a compromise.

  442. Meanwhile, Dr. Bashir and Chief O'Brien travel to Bajor to tend to an
  443. ailing leader of a village.  The leader, known as The Sirah, is responsible
  444. for chasing away the Dal Mok that visits the village for 5 nights every
  445. year.  The Dal Mok is a fearsome storm made up of unknown energy and The
  446. Sirah (or Storyteller) is the only one who can chase it away.  When the
  447. Sirah dies of old age, he chooses O'Brien as his successor.

  911. The entire command crew (yeah, right!) goes on the mission as does Quark
  912. and Odo.  Quark is along in the hopes that his business contacts in the
  913. Gamma quadrant can lead them to the Founders.  One of the merchants he does
  914. business with points them toward a relay station.  Dax and O'Brien however,
  915. are captured there but not before getting Sisko information on a possible
  916. location for the Founders from the relay station's computers.

  918. The Defiant, on its way to the new location, is found by the Jem'Hadar and
  919. the ship is attacked.  The only ones to apparently escape are Major Kira
  920. and Odo who has been inexplicably drawn to the Omarion Nebula ever since
